GAIA, together with specialist designer Fish-Pro Inc. and Golder, offers water intake construction services, including design, fabrication and installation of water intakes to protect aquatic species. GAIA’s fabrication and construction experience, combined with Fish-Pro’s aquatic engineering and design experience and Golder’s fish biology and regulatory application experience provides a full service package and DFO-compliant fish-screened water intakes.
Design of water intakes is influenced by factors including river or lake regime, the sweeping velocity, sediment and aquatic weed loading, seasonal changes and the local species of fish. Depending upon the circumstances, solutions can range from off-the-shelf passive perforated screened intakes to large-scale custom-fabricated self-cleaning wedge-wire screens mounted within intake structures and engineered with instrumentation, control systems and high-pressure jets to automatically deal with clogging. Other options include ice bumpers, air bubbler systems and hot-water back-flush systems.
